1 Hot Design

Mi Vida has sprouted up at the District Wharf, bringing with it a menu inspired by Mexican cuisine from chef Roberto SantibaƱez (of NYC's Fonda eateries) and a storied design rich with tradition and history.

1. The tale begins in the entryway: It boasts a lava-inspired look to harken Mexico’s “volcanic history,” says Knead Hospitality + Design co-founder Michael Reginbogin; the firm collaborated with Studio //3877 on the space. A 19-foot Arbol de la Vida sculpture is rooted on the first floor, boasting 50 flowers handmade out of wood, with varying colors, shapes and sizes. No two are the same, he notes.

2. Ascend the staircase, wrapped in glass, to visit the Hacienda level. “It’s reminiscent of the Spanish colonial period,” says Reginbogin, thanks to elements such as graceful archways, aged wide-plank floors and white stucco walls.

3. The third floor is outfitted with a pre-Hispanic era design. A favorite spot is the bar. Its curved ceiling is lined with custom wallpaper in a pattern reminiscent of papel picado (a style of folk art using cuttings from colored tissue paper). A sip to try: the Mez-Skull, with its (yes) skull-shaped glass.

4. For dining alfresco, there is a trio of patios and a third-floor balcony overlooking the Potomac River. The patios are climate-controlled and set a vibrant scene during sunset dinner. Savor the pescado a la talla, roasted in the hearth oven, paired with the Cielo Rojo made with chipotle-infused Chamucos Silver.
