The Party William Faulkner would have been proud. Notable writers showcased original pieces—all themed on resilience—at the Annual PEN/Faulkner gala. The event benefited the prestigious PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction fund and the Writers in Schools outreach program, connecting high school students with prominent writers.The People An audience of philanthropists and arts leaders joined co-chairs Sen. Patrick Leahy, Sen. Thad Cochran, Mary Haft and Susan Richards Shreve to enjoy the three-minute musings of 11 writers. Shreve did double-duty as a host and guest, reading from her own work upon request. The Washington Ballet’s Septime Webre and master of ceremonies, esteemed humorist Calvin Trillin, listened raptly to writers such as Carol Anshaw, Chris Bohjalian and Louis Bayard. Best In Show The stories of human fortitude ranged from the humorous—commuter frustration—to the heartbreaking—surviving losses to the Khmer Rouge and the devastation following the hurricanes in Haiti. The gathered dubbed the evening “Washington’s smartest night out.” Photography by James Brantley
