THE PARTY What a night at the museum! The National Portrait Gallery’s inaugural gala feted heavy hitters for their career accomplishments and commitment to service, including MLB Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, U.S. Marine and Medal of Honor recipient Cpl. Kyle Carpenter, singer Aretha Franklin, fashion designer Carolina Herrera, and designer and artist Maya Lin, all of whom are also immortalized with portraits in the museum’s permanent collection. THE PEOPLE The glam gala featured tributes to the honorees and award presentations from high-profile admirers like former Attorney General Eric Holder, who welcomed Franklin to the stage, and actor-filmmaker Lee Daniels, who gave Herrera her award. BEST IN SHOW The star-powered celebration impressively raised more than $1.74 million to benefit the Portrait Gallery’s exhibition programming. To celebrate, Franklin brought down the house for the gala’s 500 guests with a closing performance featuring iconic hits like “Chain of Fools” and “Respect.” –Photos by Angela Pham/
