A Cause Célèbre

| July 9, 2012 | Parties

THE PARTY The 33rd Annual Refugees International Gala, starring honorary chairs Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki and his wife Yoriko, brought Japan’s art and culture into full view. THE PEOPLE Royalty, diplomats and political players (oh my!) numbered 500, including Princess Iman bint Al Hussein and Sen. Joseph Lieberman, among many, many others. But power was hardly the only thing oozing from the event. In an increasingly less rare bout of chicness in these parts, Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan stood with the equally stunning model-advocate Lauren Bush Lauren to award her RI’s highest honor, the McCall-Pierpaoli Humanitarian Award. Other advocacy virtuosos honored for their work included Haitian activist Colette Lespinasse, RI board member Sam Waterston, and (posthumously) the late Rep. Donald Payne. BEST IN SHOW Taiko Japanese drummers of the Nen Daiko ensemble heralded guests into the historic auditorium, where more than $650,000 was raised for the organization’s efforts to stabilize displaced persons from all over the world.
