THE PARTY After attending the honoree dinner at the Corcoran Gallery of Art the night before, guests arrived at Washington’s historic Warner Theatre to watch the taping of the fifth annual BET Honors, celebrating African-American achievement across an array of industries. The gathered applauded this year’s award recipients, including Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Beverly Kearney and the Tuskegee Airmen. The party continued after the ceremony as guests flocked to The Park on Fourteenth and the National Portrait Gallery for dueling Hennessy VS after-parties. THE PEOPLE Once again, actress Gabrielle Union took on hosting duties as Hollywood heavy hitters like Aretha Franklin, Kelly Rowland, Jennifer Hudson and Patti Labelle wowed with their musical tributes. BET CEO Debra Lee, stars of the film Red Tails, Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr., and tween pop star Willow Smith were also present to pay homage to the guests of honor. BEST IN SHOW Making her BET Honors début, first lady Michelle Obama recieved a standing ovation as she took the stage to fête one of the evening’s honorees, beloved poet Maya Angelo.
