Hail to the Chief

| October 30, 2014 | Parties

The Party
The current first lady may be a fashion icon, but this year’s Cosmo Couture took presidential fashion to a new level with creations that stunned on the catwalk! The annual event paired local architecture and interior design firms with design-industry vendors to create eye-popping fashions from building materials—think skirts painstakingly crafted from carpet fiber and hats made of delicate and gorgeous tile.

The People
DC magazine’s own editor-in- chief, Michael McCarthy, served as a judge along with other design and fashion-forward locals like filmmaker Elaine Mensah and design writer Jennifer Sergent. Models sporting couture inspired by presidents from Thomas Jefferson to Lyndon Johnson strutted their stuff on the catwalk.

Best in Show
A gorgeous gown—crafted from glass, ceramic, stone tiles, Fiberglas mesh tile backing and grout, and inspired by the cherry blossoms that were gifted to DC during the Taft administration— took home the Haute Couture award. Attendees were also there for a good cause, raising $20,000 for local women’s shelter My Sister’s Place. Talk about presidential power! -
