Horsin' Around

| May 20, 2016 | Parties National

THE PARTY The first feelings of spring in the District can only mean one thing: it’s time for the legendary annual Virginia Gold Cup. This steeplechasing classic brings the cities most posh out to The Plains, Virginia for a day full of tailgating, mint juleps, big hats and friendly horse betting - all time honored traditions of race day. Hat contests were held for the most outrageous and the most glamorous hats of the day. MGM National Harbor sponsor tent was the place to be seen for those looking for an upscale way to do derby day.

THE PEOPLE City meets preppy. The crowd of 50,000 race enthusiasts, mostly Washingtonians escaping the city for the day, donned their seersucker, bow ties, sun dresses and large derby hats for the races.

BEST IN SHOW Giddy Up! The horses came in first as the main attraction of the day. Winning horses, their jockeys, owners and trainers took home winning purses ranging from 30k - 100k for just one race.
