Night on the Rocks

| March 20, 2014 | Parties

Culinary superstars José Andrés, Alice Waters and Joan Nathan lent their epicurean oomph yet again to attract a record-breaking 1,000 guests to their annual food-focused fete. The two-night event kicked off with the sold-out Sips soiree at the Newseum, featuring food and drink from powerhouse chefs like Mike Isabella of Graffiato and Kapnos, and chef-turned-TV-star Carla Hall of The Chew.

While the chefs provided the star power, it was the creative menus—and cocktails—that were the biggest hits. Guests were seen frequenting the Celebrity Cruises-sponsored elevators, which featured destination-themed drinks from their far-flung ports of call, including the Caribbean and Europe, on the top floor.

Between Sips on Saturday and the citywide Suppers event on Sunday, more than $500,000 was raised for DC Central Kitchen and Martha’s Table. “This has become such a big part of the community as a whole,” said Anders Hyde, who leads the Sips & Suppers volunteer committee. “When you go to an event like Sips, which started as a house cocktail party—and now it covers the entirety of the Newseum—it’s pretty incredible.” –Photos by Tony Brown
