THE PARTY Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater celebrated its opening night in the District with a glam gala. Preluded by a ground-shaking program featuring Ailey classic Revelations, led by Renee Robinson, the gala celebrated the troupe’s second stop on a 21-city North American tour. THE PEOPLE Ailey Artistic Director Robert Battle delivered the opening remarks to an audience of admirers and supporters, including a slew of politicos such as Rep. Elijah Cummings, Rep. Debbie Wasserman, the EPA’s Lisa Jackson and Senior Advisor to the President Valerie Jarrett. Tahira Washington, Robinson’s mother, was also present for her daughter’s second-to-last performance with Ailey. BEST IN SHOW Ballet Petite Mort made its first appearance in the company’s repertoire, receiving rave reviews. Minus 16, choreographed by Ohad Naharin using his “Gaga” method, which pushes performers out of their comfort zones, also pushed its audience out of their seats for a little onstage moving and grooving of their own.
