After loudspeakers hail the start of class, fit folks begin on either the water-filled bags or on the floor

Six moves, 10 rounds, 45 minutes of total-body conditioning. This is Rumble, the NYC-based boxing-inspired group-fitness studio that is now punching up workouts in the District. Classes $34 each, multiclass packages $165-$850, Platinum package $630, 2001 M St. NW, rumble-boxing.com

Six moves, such as the signature “jab,” are used at Rumble during a session.

THE RING The studio is distinctly DC. Where the NYC spot has a “Biggie Smalls” Buddha statue, the District’s gives a nod to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “It’s integral for us to show... love to the communities,” says co-founder Noah Neiman. There are locker rooms (with Cowshed and Drybar products), a private training room and a common area decked out with art. And you can hydrate with water by Essentia or Rumble Juice, a proprietary post-workout beverage lending instant cool factor.

THE WORKOUT Folks choose whether to start on the floor or on “the bag” (they are water-filled). You go through several rounds of each workout, switching between the bag and the floor for total cardiovascular and muscular development. In addition to group sessions, personal and private custom training is offered, led by pro trainers. Seven DC trainers have been prepping with the NYC founding team to bring the “jab” (Rumble’s signature) to our town. “The founding DC trainers are some of the most talented [people] I’ve worked with,” says Neiman. Among the hit-makers: Equinox and Cut Seven fitness trainer Mona Lavinia.

THE GEAR Rumble’s custom boxing gloves are available for rentals ($3 per use) or you can buy your own ($80 to $90 per pair). Quick wraps, which ensure proper protection, are required and available for purchase ($8). The studio also carries rotating private-label Rumble gear in collaboration with brands Nike, Koral and P.E. Nation. Says Neiman: “If you look good and feel good about the clothes you put on, you’re going to perform better.”
