THE PARTY Newsweek and The Daily Beast sponsored the first annual Hero Summit—a two-day conference spotlighting altruism of both the pen and the “sword.” Presented by Jeep and hosted by the publications’ Editor-in-Chief Tina Brown, the event focused on activists, journalists and soldiers, and the people who idolize them. THE PEOPLE Heiress Daphne Guinness and actress Jennifer Beals mused alongside politicos, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, journos Martha Raddatz and Charlie Rose, and thinkers like Bernard-Henri Lévy. The summit, which consisted of a myriad of thought-provoking panels and presentations, included a tête-à-tête between U2 front man and philanthropist Bono and his personal hero, journalist Nicholas Kristof. BEST IN SHOW Officers Keith Brodhead and Erik Sabiston, Sgt. Julia Anne Bringloe and Spc. David Capps, all members of U.S. Army Black Hawk crew Dust Off 73, shared the story of their heroism in the midst of a three-day Taliban strike in Afghanistan that earned them the highest aviation honor, the Distinguished Flying Cross.
